Chart of the Day
Today's chart compares the long-term trend of the inflation-adjusted total return of REITs (blue line) to that of the inflation-adjusted total return of the S&P 500 (gray line). There are a few points of interest. For one, REITs have outperformed stocks over the long term. Since peaking in 2007, however, REITs have significantly underperformed stocks and have broken well below a 33-year uptrend. In fact, the current correction in REITs is the biggest on record.
