Over the long-term (over three decades) REITs (real estate investment trusts) have actually outperformed stocks. Today's chart illustrates that despite the recent turmoil in real estate (since early 2007), REITs remain within a 33-year uptrend. However, while REITs have not broken below support (green line), the current correction in REITs is comparable to that of the more dramatic corrections of the past 35 years.
